Plastic Extrusion Services
Plastic extrusion is a very efficient manufacturing method that produces continuous lengths of plastic components with a uniform cross-section. At NU Gears, we concentrate in providing high-quality, dependable services to a variety of sectors. Our experience enables us to produce unique profiles, tubes, sheets, and components with accuracy and consistency.
Unlike many other manufacturing processes, extrusion offers a superb blend of cost-effectiveness, high output, and design flexibility, making it a popular choice in building, packaging, manufacturing, and engineering.
How the Plastic Extrusion Process Works
Plastic extrusion begins with feeding raw thermoplastic material, usually in the form of pellets or granules, into a hopper. From there, it enters a heated barrel where a rotating screw gradually melts and mixes the plastic. This creates a smooth, uniform molten material that is then forced through a custom-designed die to form the desired profile.
Once the plastic exits the die, it is cooled and shaped using a calibration system. Depending on the type of product, cooling may be achieved through air or water baths. The extruded product is then cut to length, coiled or processed further. Because the process is continuous, it’s ideal for producing long, uniform parts quickly and cost-effectively, with minimal material waste.

Types of Plastic Extrusion
There are several main types of plastic extrusion, each suited to different applications:
- Profile extrusion: Used to create complex cross-sections such as trims, weatherstripping, window frames and custom channels.
- Pipe and tubing extrusion: Ideal for producing hollow profiles such as conduits, pipes, hoses and protective sleeves.
- Sheet and film extrusion: Creates flat sheets or thin films used in packaging, construction and industrial applications.
- Co-extrusion: Combines multiple layers of different materials in one profile, adding features like UV protection, barrier properties or enhanced strength.
By selecting the right method, we can deliver profiles that meet your exact design, performance and cost requirements.
Key Benefits of Plastic Extrusion
Plastic extrusion offers a unique set of advantages that make it one of the most cost-effective and versatile manufacturing methods available:
- High Efficiency & Continuous Production – Extrusion runs continuously, enabling large volumes to be produced quickly.
- Low Cost per Unit – Tooling costs are quickly offset by long production runs and minimal waste.
- Excellent Design Flexibility – Almost any constant cross-section can be produced, including complex and multi-layer profiles.
- Consistent Quality – Modern extrusion systems maintain tight tolerances and excellent surface finishes.
- Sustainable Manufacturing – Many thermoplastics are recyclable, and production scrap can often be reprocessed.
- Reduced Secondary Processing – Products often come off the line ready to use, with minimal finishing required.
These benefits make extrusion the go-to method for industries that demand both performance and cost control.
Types of Plastic Extrusion
Plastic extrusion is used to create long lengths of plastic components such as pipes, profiles, sheets and films. It’s widely used in construction, packaging, manufacturing and industrial sectors.
Materials like PVC, HDPE, LDPE, PP, ABS and PC are commonly used because of their strength, flexibility and ease of processing.
Extrusion produces continuous profiles with a constant cross-section, while injection moulding creates individual shaped components in a mould. Extrusion is ideal for long parts, injection moulding for complex 3D shapes.
Yes. At NU Gears, we can design and manufacture bespoke dies to produce custom profiles and dimensions to match your exact requirements.
Many extruded plastics can be recycled, and extrusion lines often reprocess their own scrap material, making the process more sustainable than many alternatives.
